September 28th 1991, American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer Miles Davis died of a stroke and pneumonia. His 1959 album 'Kind of Blue', is a major influence on jazz music. Davis is considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century.

October 4th 1970, US singer Janis Joplin was found dead at the Landmark Hotel Hollywood after an accidental heroin overdose. Joplin had the posthumous 1971 US No.1 single 'Me And Bobby McGee', and the 1971 US No.1 album 'Pearl'. She was known as "The Queen of Psychedelic Soul" and as "Pearl" to her friends, Joplin remains one of the top-selling musicians in the United States, with over 15.5 million albums sold in the USA.

October 5th 1951, Born on this day, Bob Geldof, Irish singer, songwriter, actor and political activist. The Boomtown Rats, (1979 UK No.1 single 'I Don't Like Mondays' plus 10 other UK Top 40 singles). Geldof was the driving force behind the Band Aid - Live Aid relief project after seeing a BBC news report on the famine in Ethiopia. He called Midge Ure from Ultravox, and together they co-wrote the song, Do They Know It's Christmas?

October 9th 1940, Born on this day, John Lennon singer, songwriter, guitarist, The Beatles sold over 20m singles worldwide, (1962-1970), and scored more UK & US No.1 albums than any other group. 1967 'Sgt. Pepper's' is the UK's biggest selling album ever. In 1990 Lennon's song 'Imagine' was played simultaneously in 130 countries to commemorate what would've been Lennon's 50th birthday. He was shot dead in New York by Mark Chapman on 8th December 1980.

October 12th 1948, Born on this day, Rick Parfitt, vocals, guitar, Status Quo. Status Quo had over 60 chart hits in the UK, more than any other rock band, including 'Pictures of Matchstick Men' in 1967, 'Whatever You Want' in 1979 and 'In the Army Now' in 2010. Twenty-two of these reached the Top 10 in the UK. In July 1985 the band opened Live Aid at Wembley Stadium with 'Rockin' All Over the World' .Parfitt died on 24th Dec 2016 in hospital in Marbella, Spain aged 68.

Goode' was one of the examples of music from Earth sent out to space. Berry died on 18 March 2017 aged 90.
